History
Taxco, in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, has become internationally synonymous with fine silver jewelry. The region has a long history of silver mining dating to the colonial period, but Taxco’s modern jewelry identity developed especially during the 20th century, when local Mexican craftsmanship combined with new artistic and design movements. Taxco subsequently became an important center for silversmiths, workshops, and jewelry designers.

Technique

Many traditional workshops involve multiple stages of hand production, including forming, joining, polishing, oxidizing, and finishing the silver.

Materials
Sterling silver is the defining material of Taxco jewelry, commonly marked 925 to indicate 92.5% silver content. Depending on the design, silver may be highly polished, given a matte finish, or intentionally oxidized to emphasize recessed patterns and create greater visual depth.

Taxco artisans also frequently combine silver with turquoise, onyx, amethyst, obsidian, coral, and other stones and natural materials, producing the strong contrast characteristic of many Mexican silver designs.

Design & Aesthetic
Taxco silver is particularly recognizable for its combination of bold shapes, substantial metalwork, and sophisticated craftsmanship. Designs range from geometric and highly modernist compositions to elaborate pieces inspired by Mexico’s plants, animals, architecture, and pre-Hispanic artistic heritage.

Serpents, masks, birds, flowers, geometric patterns, and interpretations of ancient Mesoamerican imagery have all appeared within Taxco jewelry.
