Sylyanka (Силянка)

History
Sylyanka is a traditional Ukrainian beaded neck ornament, most strongly associated with Western Ukraine, particularly Galicia, Bukovyna, Pokuttia, and the Carpathian regions. Beadwork became an important part of regional folk dress, with patterns and color combinations developing distinctive local characteristics. Sylyankas were valued both for their decorative beauty and as expressions of craftsmanship, community, and cultural heritage.

Technique
A sylyanka is traditionally made by carefully threading small beads into an open, net-like structure. Unlike the denser woven appearance of many gerdans, the characteristic construction of a sylyanka often creates a delicate lattice resembling beaded lace. Geometric motifs are formed through the precise placement and repetition of colored beads.

Materials
Traditional sylyankas are primarily made from small glass beads, historically including beads obtained through European trade. Designs can incorporate red, black, white, green, blue, yellow, and other colors. Modern artisans often work with Czech or Japanese glass beads because their consistent size allows particularly detailed patterns.

How It Is Worn
The sylyanka is generally worn closely around the neck like a collar or choker. Its width can range from a narrow decorative band to a broad, elaborate collar covering much of the neckline. Traditionally, it was paired with an embroidered vyshyvanka and other elements of regional dress; today, it is also worn as a statement piece with contemporary clothing.

Cultural Meaning
The geometric patterns and colors of sylyanka can carry associations with protection, harmony, vitality, continuity, and heritage, although symbolism varies considerably between regions and individual designs. More broadly, the tradition represents the preservation of Ukrainian beadwork and the transmission of artisanal knowledge between generations.
